Not only is acrylic paint easy to use and affordable but it can also be applied to a variety of surfaces beyond just canvas.

From walls to furniture to even your own body, the possibilities are endless when it comes to unleashing your creativity with acrylic paint.

In this article, I’ll show you some of the exciting ways I have used acrylic paint to transform my living space and express my unique style.

So, grab your paintbrush, and let’s get started.

What Can You Use Acrylic Paint On?

The most popular surfaces for painting with acrylics are canvas, wood, or paper. But once primed with gesso, you can paint acrylics on almost any surface, such as fabric, clay, or even your old vinyl records.

What is Acrylic Paint?

Acrylic paint is a water-based medium made up of pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion.

It’s a versatile and fast-drying paint that you can use on a wide range of surfaces, including canvas, wood, and fabric.

Acrylic paint ingredients

Acrylic paint is a medium that consists of several essential ingredients, each playing a vital role in its formulation. Pigment, being the colorant, gives the paint its desired hue.

The binder, which is an acrylic polymer emulsion, holds the pigment particles together, providing adhesion and flexibility to the paint.

The solvent, usually water, thins the paint, allowing it to spread easily.

Additives such as extenders and thickeners may also be included to modify the paint’s properties, such as its flow, drying time, or texture.

Depending on the brand and price point, the quality and type of these ingredients can vary, resulting in different colors, finishes, and textures.

Understanding the science behind acrylic paints

Acrylic paint is a fascinating medium that offers a lot of creative possibilities.

However, understanding the science behind how it works can help you make the most of its unique properties.

At its most basic level, acrylic paint is made up of pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion.

This polymer is made up of tiny particles that are dispersed in water. This allows the paint to be spreadable and workable.

As the water in the paint evaporates, the polymer particles begin to bond together and form a tough, flexible film.

The polymerization process that happens as the paint dries is key to understanding acrylic paint.

The polymer particles are designed to interlock and form a tight network that is resistant to cracking, fading, and other forms of damage.

This network also helps to ensure that the paint adheres well to a wide range of surfaces, from canvas and paper to metal and plastic.

What is Acrylic Paint?

Traditional Vs Modern Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint has undergone significant developments since its invention in the 1950s.

The properties of traditional and modern acrylic paints differ significantly. Modern formulations incorporate advancements in technology and chemistry.

Modern acrylic paints have improved properties and advantages over traditional acrylic paints.

This includes greater durability, faster drying time than oil paints, and higher-quality pigments.

Traditional acrylic paints are still useful for certain applications due to their thicker consistency.

Here are some of the key differences between traditional and modern acrylic paints:

Binder

Traditional acrylic paints use a binder made of acrylic polymer emulsion. This binder makes the paint become brittle over time.

Modern acrylic paints use a more advanced binder system, such as 100% acrylic polymer.  This provides greater flexibility and durability.

Pigments

Modern acrylic paints often use higher-quality pigments that are more vibrant, lightfast, and resistant to fading than those used in traditional formulations.

Drying time

Traditional acrylic paints have a longer drying time than modern acrylic paints. This to me is a disadvantage when I need to work quickly.

Modern acrylic paints can dry in as little as 15 minutes, giving me the freedom to layer and blend colors easily.

Consistency

Traditional acrylic paints have a thicker consistency.  Modern acrylic paints can have a more fluid consistency.

Thicker consistencies are more difficult to work with.

Health and Safety

Modern acrylic paints often have improved health and safety properties.

This is because they have low volatile organic compounds, making them safer to use for artists, and better for the environment.

What Surfaces Can You Use Acrylic Paint on?

Acrylic paint provides an ideal medium for both novice and experienced painters alike due to its versatility. You can use it on a variety of surfaces like:

Canvas

We have a guide on beginner black canvas painting that is easy to start with.

Acrylic paint works great on canvas because it adheres to the fabric better than other types of paint.

Canvas provides the perfect surface for creating artwork, as it is easy to work with and gives even coverage.

To ensure successful acrylic paintings on canvas, use an acrylic primer or gesso to prepare the painting surface. (Here’s more to dig about what is acrylic primer).

This helps the paint adhere better and prevents it from soaking into the fibers of the canvas.

Also, consider the texture of the canvas when painting. A smoother canvas will need less paint than a rougher canvas and may require a different painting technique.

When painting on canvas, do not apply too much paint as this can stretch or distort the surface. After you are done, seal your work; here is how to protect a canvas painting.

Painting on Canvas

Paper

Acrylic paint can be used on paper, but choose the right type of paper to avoid issues with the moisture of the paint.

I recommend heavyweight paper, such as watercolor paper, bristol board, or mixed media paper.

These papers can handle the moisture of the paint without warping or tearing. When painting on paper with acrylics, experiment with different textures and weights of paper to achieve different effects.

Cardboard

Cardboard is an inexpensive and easily available material that can be a great surface for acrylic painting.

However, remember that cardboard is not as durable as other surfaces like canvas or wood.

Use high-quality cardboard and prepare the surface with a primer or gesso substitute before painting to help the paint adhere better and prevent it from soaking into the cardboard.

Wood

If you’ve tried painting on wood, then you know that the results are awesome. The natural grain and texture of the wood can add depth and character to a painting.

The durability of the surface makes it perfect for creating long-lasting pieces. However, painting on wood requires some preparation to ensure the best results.

Remember to sand the surface to create a smooth and even surface, clean it to remove any dirt or debris, and apply a primer or gesso to help the paint adhere better.

When painting on wood, use a thicker paint or add an acrylic medium to the paint to prevent it from soaking into the wood. And also, remember to seal your acrylic paint on wood for protection from external environement.

Glass

I have had so much fun painting on glass with acrylic paint. I always wipe the glass surface with rubbing alcohol or glass cleaner to remove any dirt, oils, or residue.

I then use a primer designed for use on glass to create a surface that the paint will adhere to.

When painting, I employ a light touch and apply thin layers of paint to avoid any drips or smudges.

Additionally, I utilize translucent or iridescent mediums to infuse depth and dimension into the artwork.

Lastly, seal the paint. Here is how to seal paint on glass.

Ceramic

Ceramics have a smooth, glossy finish which allows the colors to stand out and shine.

Painting ceramic with acrylic paint is easy and can be made even easier if you use a primer before painting your piece.

Paint your ceramic piece using the same techniques you would use when painting with any other paint.

Apply thin layers of acrylic paint and allow them to dry completely in between each layer. Once you’re done, seal your finished piece with a clear coat acrylic paint for added protection.

Metal

Imagine how painting metal could be a great way to add a splash of color to your home. Metal surfaces, such as aluminum or galvanized steel, can be painted easily with acrylic paint.

But before you start painting metal with acrylics, clean the surface and use an appropriate primer for the best results.

Because of the glossy finish that most metals have, sand them down before priming and painting them.

This will create a better base for the acrylic paint to adhere to and will result in a much more even finish.

Plastic

Not only can acrylic paint be used on traditional surfaces like stretched canvas, board, or paper. It can also be used for painting plastic items such as model trains, dolls houses, and toys.

Acrylic paint adheres well to plastic surfaces and provides a vibrant finish when properly applied. Before you begin painting, clean and sand for a smooth finish.

Once you’ve prepped the surface, use a soft brush or roller to apply all the paint in thin layers until you achieve the desired effect. Next! Seal paint on plastic.

Fabric

Using acrylic paint on fabric is a fun and versatile way to create unique designs on clothing, accessories, and home decor. When painting on fabric, prepare the fabric to ensure the best results.

Mix the acrylic paint with a fabric medium to help the paint adhere to the fabric and prevent cracking or peeling.

Also, wash and dry the fabric before painting to remove any finishes that may interfere with the paint’s adhesion.

Use a light touch and thin layers of paint to prevent the fabric from becoming stiff or stiffening.

Finally, heat-set the paint according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure it is permanent and long-lasting.

Painting on Fabric

Leather

Leather items are so beautiful. Colored leather items are even more beautiful. To paint these items, use acrylic paint to add vibrant colors and intricate designs to leather goods.

Whether it’s shoes, purses, or jackets, painting on leather can add a unique touch to any accessory. However, before painting, clean the leather surface with rubbing alcohol or leather cleaner.

Read our guide to find out the best acrylic paint for shoes.

Use a primer designed for use on leather to create a surface that the paint will adhere to. Use a fine-tip paintbrush or airbrush to create intricate designs or details. After that, remember to seal your painted leather for protection.
